Remembering Dodge Inn: A Piece of Sioux City History

For generations of Sioux City residents, the name Dodge Inn brings back memories of a neighborhood bar, good times, cold drinks, and a place where friends could gather and enjoy each other's company.

The Dodge Inn became part of the local history of Sioux City, Iowa, and its story eventually included not one, but two establishments carrying the Dodge Inn name.

According to an archived customer account, the original Dodge Inn eventually closed after the building burned down. The same account describes the first location as a popular place with a fun beer garden and says it was a favorite among many local residents.

After the original Dodge Inn was gone, Dodge Inn Again carried on the name and became the second bar in the Dodge Inn line. Historical business directories list Dodge Inn Again at 1421 Dace Avenue in Sioux City, where it was categorized as a beer tavern and bar & grill. One directory also identifies Ron Hummel as the owner.

Dodge Inn Again eventually became part of Sioux City's own collection of places remembered by longtime residents. By 2021, the building at 1421 Dace Avenue was no longer operating as the Dodge Inn Again. Sioux City City Council meeting minutes from March 22, 2021, noted that the building that formerly housed Dodge Inn Again appeared to be abandoned and was in poor condition.

Although much of the detailed history of the original Dodge Inn—including the exact date and circumstances of the fire—is difficult to find in readily available online records, the memories surrounding the place have survived. For people who remember Sioux City from decades ago, Dodge Inn wasn't simply another bar—it was part of the neighborhood and part of the memories of the people who spent time there.

Today, those memories can live on in another way.
