Curly's Dairy, Salem, Oregon

I remember Curly’s Dairy well — a beloved local spot in Salem. Later in life, I even got to know the last owner before they sold it. He was a very kind and genuine person, someone who clearly cared about the community.

I also have great memories of the trains and the special events they used to have in the area. Nearby, the Nameless Market would host its own celebrations, bringing people together with fun activities — including appearances by Rusty the Clown, a favorite among kids and families.

Those were truly fond times, filled with laughter, good company, and simple joys that left a lasting mark on Salem’s story.

One iconic memory from downtown Salem includes The Metropolitan Store at 136 Commercial Street (East side), captured in 1972. Just before Walter relocated the store to Liberty Street (East side) into the old JCPenney building — which, if memory serves, was also once home to Marilyn's Shoes — this snapshot preserved a piece of everyday Salem life. Shops like these were more than just businesses; they were part of the fabric that made downtown vibrant and full of character.

The Brunks of Brunks Corner – A True Piece of Salem History

Brunks Corner West Salem Oregon Historic House

Mr. and Mrs. Brunk of Brunks Corner, located west of West Salem at the corner of Highway 22 and Oak Grove Road, are an important part of the area's history. The Brunk family has deep roots in the West Salem community, and their historic farmhouse still stands today as a proud reminder of Salem's pioneer past.

My dad used to tell me a story from when he was quite young, probably in the late 1930s. He recalled going along with his parents to visit the Brunks. He spent a long Sunday afternoon sitting quietly in the Brunk’s parlor — a typical experience for a young boy who found it a bit boring at the time. But as he grew older, he truly cherished those memories of being inside that old farmhouse, sharing an afternoon with the descendants of a real Oregon pioneer family.

It’s memories like these that keep the spirit of old Salem alive — the simple visits, the local families, and the sense of connection to those who helped build the community we know today.

In 1995, The Star City Grill and the Memory Lane store were two beloved spots along State Street in Salem. Both places carried a special charm — Star City Grill was known for its cozy, welcoming atmosphere and great food, while Memory Lane was packed with nostalgic treasures that locals loved to explore.

These businesses added a unique flavor to State Street, offering a mix of good eats and a walk down memory lane (literally!). For many Salem residents, stopping by either place was a regular part of life — and a memory that still brings a smile today.

Burgerville USA on Market Street – A 1967 Salem Memory

Does anyone remember where this Burgerville USA was located?
My memory says it was on Market Street near Hawthorne, and the photo I have was date-stamped by the developer as May 1967. 😊

Burgerville USA was one of those classic spots — a place where families grabbed a quick meal and teenagers met up after cruising The Gut. It’s amazing how just seeing an old photo can bring back the smells of burgers and fries, the sounds of engines rumbling, and the feeling of simpler times in Salem.
